The choice of building materials could be one of the construction industry's most powerful weapons in the fight against climate change, according to new analysis highlighting the growing environmental benefits of timber construction.

West Fraser's latest Sustainability Report reveals that the use of its wood products helped avoid an estimated 19.8 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions in 2025, underscoring the significant role timber can play in cutting the carbon footprint of buildings. The figure is based on "displacement" analysis, which measures emissions avoided when wood is used in place of more carbon-intensive materials such as steel and concrete. 

The findings come as the construction sector faces mounting pressure to tackle not only operational emissions but also the embodied carbon locked into buildings throughout their lifecycle. Industry attention is increasingly focused on Scope 3 emissions, which arise across supply chains and often account for a substantial share of a building's total environmental impact.

According to the report, early design decisions can have a major influence on those emissions. By choosing timber, architects and developers have an opportunity to reduce embodied carbon from the outset while maintaining structural performance and design flexibility. Timber's renewable nature and lower energy requirements during production make it an increasingly attractive option for projects seeking to align with net-zero commitments. 

The report also reflects a broader shift in industry thinking. Rather than relying solely on technological advances to decarbonise the built environment, experts are increasingly recognising the importance of material choices in delivering meaningful emissions reductions. As whole-life carbon assessments become more commonplace, demonstrating lower Scope 3 emissions is becoming a critical factor for developers, investors and clients alike. 

With governments and businesses accelerating their climate goals, timber is gaining ground as a practical, scalable solution. The latest figures add to growing evidence that what buildings are made from could prove just as important as how they are powered in the race to net zero.
