Why a career in sustainability?

As organisations face increasing pressure to respond to challenges like climate change, resource constraints, and evolving regulation, the demand for professionals with green skills is accelerating across industries.

According to the 2025 PwC Green Jobs Barometer, demand for green roles in the UK has been growing significantly faster than the overall job market—highlighting a clear shift in what employers need.

This isn’t a niche career path anymore. Sustainability is now embedded in business strategy, operations, finance, and risk. Creating opportunities in everything from supply chains and construction to data, reporting, and leadership.

Choosing a career in sustainability means positioning yourself at the centre of this transition. You’ll help organisations adapt, innovate, and stay competitive in a rapidly changing world.

It’s a career that offers variety, long-term demand, and the chance to work on challenges that are shaping the future of every industry.

I joined ISEP shortly after being handed environmental management responsibilities for our organisation and being tasked with delivering an Environmental Management System appropriate for our business and to meet the ISO 14001 standard. ISEP membership has given me the skills and confidence to progress not only my professional and personal development and but was instrumental in helping provide to establish our EMS which is now fully operational and ISO 14001 certified. The ISEP training I have undertaken since becoming a member has also introduced me to wider environmental and social issues, which has encouraged me to not only advance my ISEP membership level but inspired me to enrol on an Environmental Studies degree – something I would never have considered just a couple of years ago! If you’re considering joining ISEP, my advice would be to go for it. It will not only open up opportunities, but it will also open your eyes.

Associate membership

My journey with ISEP has been an immensely enriching experience. Originally from a finance background, I felt a calling towards sustainability after four years in the industry. This led me to pursue a Master's in Sustainable Development, which served as a pivotal point in my career transition. Upon completing my studies, I ventured into the realm of sustainability consultancy, where my employer urged me to embark on the ISEP journey. Recognizing the value of aligning with a professional body to deepen my understanding of sustainability and stay abreast of emerging trends, I eagerly embraced the opportunity. Upon successfully passing the Associate exam, I seized the chance to contribute further by joining the Sustainable Finance Network Steering Committee. Within this role, I collaborate with industry leaders to drive initiatives aimed at advancing the sustainable finance agenda and promoting ESG principles. It's been immensely fulfilling to help organize various webinars and Insight Journals, thereby disseminating crucial sustainability knowledge within the finance community. Looking ahead, my aspiration is to continue progressing within the program, ultimately striving towards attaining full membership and achieving chartered environmentalist status. For those considering embarking on this journey, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. It's a continuous path of self-improvement and professional growth, offering invaluable opportunities to make a meaningful difference in the world of sustainability.

Graduate membership

While I'm early in my career, ISEP has given me some great opportunities to develop my knowledge of sustainability topics, and my network. Sustainability runs through social value across all dimensions, and I'm grateful for the access that being a member has given me to some great resources, events, and experts to learn from, through ISEP Futures, and the Regional Networks, where I have been given the opportunity to become a Steering Group Committee Member for my local network. Having ISEP membership gives me confidence when talking on sustainability topics, and I would definitely recommend membership to ISEP to any students, recent graduates or anyone else early in their sustainability career.
