ISEP is the largest accreditor of Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), working in partnership with Society for the Environment (SocEnv) since its inception.

Because of this, our professional body membership is designed to make recognition simpler:

  1. Streamlined routes for Practitioner membership and Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP)
  2. Apply once to gain Full membership and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)
  3. A trusted, globally recognised benchmark of your professional competence

This means less duplication, a clearer pathway, and faster progression to recognised status.

Dr Gayathiri Gowri Shankar, Fellow member (MISEP), Senior Sustainable Consultant

ISEP was instrumental in my sustainability career journey right from the day I completed my Masters of Architecture (Sustainability). I started off as an Affiliate member to work out the path and in 10 years, I became a Fellow. ISEP's resources and networking events are useful for us to share our experience and knowledge, while at the same time learn from others to implement in our roles/projects. I find ISEP's Transform magazine and other specialists groups help us to keep up-to-date with the changes that are happening in the UK and elsewhere. I strongly recommend graduates and others levels in sustainability career to become a member of ISEP to be recognised in the sustainability sector. We, as a sustainability profession, got more responsibility to bring a sustainable change in this world to combat against climate change and social justice.

Magsud Aghayev, Practitioner member (PISEP), HS Advisor

In 2015, while conducting online research, I fortuitously encountered the International Environmental Management Association (IEMA) [now ISEP], and was intrigued by its reputation and the vast repository of knowledge it promised. With a background as a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) professional, my forte had primarily been on the safety dimensions. However, upon undertaking a major pipeline construction initiative, I became acutely aware of the intricate environmental considerations intrinsic to such expansive projects. ISEP became an instrumental guide during this pivotal phase. By elucidating the foundational principles of environmental management, they rendered an invaluable service, granting me access to an unparalleled spectrum of learning resources. This interaction and learning not only augmented my awareness but also precipitated a marked enhancement in my practical proficiencies in environmental and sustainability management. In the dynamic landscape of environmental challenges, where the stakes are perennially high and the complexities manifold, ISEP stands out as a beacon of knowledge and guidance. I would unreservedly advocate for their expertise and recommend their resources to professionals who are earnest in their pursuit of mastery in environmental management.

Andrew Anderson, Associate member (AISEP), Environmental Health and Safety Officer

I used to teach English in an FE College but wanted to change my career and work in Sustainability, to help protect the environment. Completely retraining in my new career would have been impossible without ISEP's help and support. ISEP helped me get a grounding in the topic through their structured membership levels and training programme. I am now completing the Certificate in Environmental Management and hope to be accepted to practitioner level soon.

Arlette Anderson, Fellow member (FISEP), Director, Sustainability

Becoming a member of ISEP early in my career was vital to how I could focus my efforts and develop personally and professionally in the opportunities I have had in transforming positive sustainable change in large organisations over the last 25 years. ISEP membership has provided me with worldwide knowledge and a robust professional development pathway to recognised as a credible and respected sustainability professional. Having a clear membership development pathway has helped show a clear path of professional and personal development. Being able to demonstrate learning, connecting with other members and applying this learning has been supported by the ISEP membership growth pathway. The ISEP Skills Map is a fantastic resource to understand and articulate the skills and experiences sustainability professionals need to develop their career.

Emma Goodchild, Fellow member (FISEP), Technical Director

ISEP membership has been a fundamental element of my career, from my university studies through to my current role as a Technical Director of SLR Consulting Ltd, spanning over 30 years. Through my membership I've kept up to date with the rapidly developing sustainability and legal compliance arena and enabled me to feel confident in advising my clients on a wide range of topics. Progression through the membership levels has been rewarding and enabled me to clearly demonstrate my competence to others both internally and externally. I would therefore wholeheartedly recommend ISEP membership to anyone starting their career in environmental sustainability.

Frances Stones, Full member (MISEP), Senior Auditor

Way, way back in 1999 I joined the Institute of Environmental Management (IEM) and the Environmental Auditors Registration Association (EARA), just before they merged to form IEMA [now ISEP]. Over the past two and a bit decades (yes, I really am that old) I have been a proud and active member of our professional body. ISEP is a fantastic source of information and a true melting-pot for professional collaboration and influence over both industry and government. In all my time as a member, I have always felt supported by ISEP and some-what emboldened by the validation that membership has given me. I remember becoming a Chartered Environmentalist in 2006 and my boss at the time (a Chartered Chemical Engineer) told me that I couldn't become "Chartered" because I wasn't an Engineer. This 'underestimation' of the importance of environmental management and sustainability as a profession has always stuck with me as another myth worth busting! Being a sustainability professional can also be quite an isolated existence and over the years I have also been proud to 'give back' to our community, as an ISEP Full Membership Assessor, MIEMA Mentor and most recently I am proud to have been accepted as a Principal Environmental Auditor Assessor. I encourage anyone working in the environmental or sustainability field to join ISEP and explore the opportunities that membership can bring to their personal and professional life.

Gary Price, Associate member (AISEP), EHS Manager

I joined ISEP shortly after being handed environmental management responsibilities for our organisation and being tasked with delivering an Environmental Management System appropriate for our business and to meet the ISO 14001 standard. ISEP membership has given me the skills and confidence to progress not only my professional and personal development and but was instrumental in helping provide to establish our EMS which is now fully operational and ISO 14001 certified. The ISEP training I have undertaken since becoming a member has also introduced me to wider environmental and social issues, which has encouraged me to not only advance my ISEP membership level but inspired me to enrol on an Environmental Studies degree – something I would never have considered just a couple of years ago! If you’re considering joining ISEP, my advice would be to go for it. It will not only open up opportunities, but it will also open your eyes.
