In a groundbreaking initiative, ISEP will launch a new Register of Carbon Accountants and Auditors in 2025 in partnership with the Carbon Accounting Alliance

The Register will allow sustainability professionals to showcase their expertise in carbon accounting and auditing. This is your opportunity to help shape the competencies required for organisational, product, and project-level carbon accounting.

Why does a Register of Carbon Accountants matter?

The Register will provide a clear, credible way for individuals and organisations to demonstrate their qualifications and experience in carbon accounting to clients, regulatory bodies, and voluntary reporting schemes. Whether you’re an individual professional or part of a consultancy, registration will give you the tools to show that you meet the industry’s rigorous standards for managing carbon data effectively and ethically.

Setting the Standard for Carbon Accounting

The main goal of the Register is to promote effective carbon accounting practices by establishing high-quality standards based on the knowledge and experience of professionals in the field. By becoming a registered carbon accountant, you’ll not only enhance your professional credibility but also contribute to building trust and transparency in carbon reporting.

The Register will also provide a defined career pathway, offering opportunities for growth and recognition as the demand for skilled carbon accountants continues to rise.

Three Tiers of Expertise

We’ve proposed three distinct grades for carbon accountants: Technical Associate (TACA)Registered Practitioner (RPCA), and Principal (PCA). Each grade comes with its own set of competencies, tailored to the level of expertise required.

We want to ensure that these competencies align with the real-world needs of the profession. That’s where you come in! We invite you to review the proposed competencies and let us know if we’ve covered all the key skills and whether the levels are appropriately aligned. Your feedback is crucial in making the Register a success.

How You Can Get Involved

We ran a consultation on the proposed framework of competencies for eight weeks, ending on Monday 21st April 2025. The survey has now closed, and we will share the proposed framework once we have reviewed and incorporated the comments received during the consultation. In the meantime, to be kept updated on the register click here.

Administered by Experts

The Carbon Accounting Register will be part of ISEP’s Specialist Registers portfolio, managed by the Professional Standards team and administered day-to-day by ISEP’s Membership and Standards team. This ensures that the Register maintains the highest level of quality and professionalism.
