Australia presents a sustainability context that is distinctive in both scale and complexity. Spanning an entire continent, it encompasses extraordinary geographic and ecological diversity—from tropical rainforests and arid deserts to expansive coastlines and alpine environments. For sustainability professionals, this creates a landscape rich in both challenges and opportunities, often operating at a scale few other countries experience.

At the heart of this context is the enduring knowledge and custodianship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples—the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. Their deep, place-based relationship with land and Country remains fundamental to understanding sustainability in Australia today. Alongside this sits a modern economy shaped by large-scale industries and globally significant natural resources.

One area of particular importance is Australia’s role in the energy transition. The country is a major supplier of critical minerals, essential for low-carbon technologies. As Anthony Albanese has observed, Australia effectively has “the periodic table under its feet.” This is more than rhetoric: in 2024, Australia accounted for approximately 43% of global lithium production, underlining its central role in powering the global shift to cleaner energy systems.

A growing professional network

Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals Australia is an active and expanding network of sustainability and environmental professionals working across the country. Our steering committee reflects this breadth, with representation from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia—capturing the diversity of regional contexts and professional practice nationwide.

Our focus is on connecting members, strengthening the profession, and fostering collaboration. We aim to provide a welcoming entry point for those seeking to understand Australia’s sustainability landscape, build professional networks, and engage more deeply with local practice.

Supporting members at every stage

We are particularly keen to support members who are considering a move to Australia, as well as those already here who would value a friendly point of contact. Navigating a new professional environment can be challenging, and where possible, we aim to offer practical insight, guidance, and introductions to help members settle and succeed.

"We essentially have the periodic table under our feet in this country." Anthony Albanese

Regional collaboration and shared learning

Our network also benefits from strong regional relationships, particularly with ISEP Hong Kong and ISEP New Zealand Aotearoa. Through joint events and knowledge-sharing initiatives, we continue to build connections across the Asia-Pacific region.

A recent highlight is a collaborative session with Martin Baxter, ISEP's Deputy CEO, focusing on the upcoming ISO 14001:2026 update—demonstrating the value of shared expertise across borders.

Looking ahead

As the network continues to grow, we look forward to welcoming new members and strengthening connections across Australia. Whether you are already based here or exploring opportunities to engage with sustainability practice in Australia, ISEP Australia offers a platform to connect, learn, and contribute.

We look forward to building those connections with you.
