Higher temperatures, increased rainfall with associated flooding, and increased droughts are being experienced at a global level.

There are global targets to mitigate and adapt to climate change and halt the decline of nature by 2030 and bring about a reversal by 2050, through net zero and the UN Global Biodiversity Framework, with different countries developing their own internal targets in order to deliver improvement.

This new paper How environmental management can deliver value to organisations, aimed at non-environmental and sustainability senior executives and managers, sets out the case for environmental management as the bedrock of sustainability and as a high value asset in effective organisation administration.

The process and structure that a good environmental management brings has never been so important to help organisations keep up with environmental trends, regulations and risk.

Good environmental management can help organisations to reduce their energy use, meet net zero targets, start to understand biodiversity – it underpins all good environmental management practice.

This paper takes the reader through:

  • Planning for the future
  • Risks and opportunities associated with environmental management
  • The value that environmental management provides to an organisation
  • Materiality
  • The stages of cultural maturity

Effective environmental management can help meet regulatory requirements but also to understand the context of the organisation. It can improve organisational reputation and make it more attractive in tendering or as part of a supply chain.

In terms of process, an environmental management system can create a procedure that is replicable over time, across sites and across peers. It can help create more efficient processes, identify new innovations, and importantly - save money.

If you want to raise awareness of the benefits of an environmental management system to your organisation, with your senior management teams, this paper is a great source of information that you can share.
