Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we work, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is no exception. As AI tools become more powerful and accessible, it’s essential that environmental professionals use them responsibly, transparently, and effectively.

To support this, ISEP has released its new Advice Note: Using AI in EIA, providing clear, practical guidance on how to apply AI within environmental and sustainability assessments.

This concise advice note distils complex issues into practical principles for day-to-day use. Written by EIA practitioners, for EIA practitioners, it explores both the potential and the pitfalls of AI across baseline data collection, predictive modelling, document management, consultation and reporting.

The note stresses the importance of competence, transparency, verification, and ethical awareness. It is not about replacing human expertise, but enhancing it, and ensuring that EIA remains robust, defensible, and trusted.

At just a few pages, this is a quick, accessible read designed to help professionals navigate an increasingly digital future. Whether you’re an assessor, reviewer, or stakeholder, the Advice Note offers a timely, valuable framework to ensure good practice in an era of rapid technological change.
