On behalf of the Steering Group, John Hill, East of England Chair, is pleased to share an update with members. We hope it provides useful insight into our upcoming events, initiatives, and opportunities for engagement, and we look forward to your contributions and ideas as we continue to shape the sustainability conversation together.
In a fast-moving professional landscape, routine legal and legislative updates are no longer enough. The challenges facing our sector, particularly around sustainability, decarbonisation, and environmental compliance, require deeper engagement, shared insight, and ongoing professional development.
As a regional committee, we are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for dialogue around the issues that matter most to you. We want to hear your views on the themes influencing your work beyond day-to-day regulatory change, whether that’s the transition to zero-carbon initiatives, biodiversity requirements, hydrogen deployment, or other emerging priorities.
Over the past year, we have found that regular webinars provide an effective and accessible platform for engagement. These sessions allow members to:
- Contribute ideas and perspectives
- Stay informed about emerging technical and regulatory developments
- Update their training in response to evolving industry standards
- Engage with peers across the region
The response has been strong, and participation continues to grow. Webinars offer flexibility while maintaining the quality of professional exchange we value.
Following the success of our hydrogen webinar in October 2025, we will be organising a further session to continue exploring developments in hydrogen policy, infrastructure, and implementation challenges.
We are also planning an introductory event on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), focusing on the statutory requirements introduced under the Environment Act 2021. As BNG becomes embedded within planning and development frameworks, understanding its legal and practical implications will be essential for many of our members.
We hope these sessions will be both timely and directly relevant to your work.
While digital events have proven highly effective, we also recognise the value of in-person connection. Our now-annual Cambridge Christmas social continues to be well attended and provides an excellent opportunity for informal networking and professional relationship-building.
We remain open to suggestions for:
- Future webinar topics
- Panel discussions or specialist briefings
- Collaborative digital events
- Occasional face-to-face meetings
The direction of our programme depends on you. We are keen to understand the topics you want to explore and the challenges you would like addressed. The committee welcomes your ideas and will respond accordingly, shaping events around areas of genuine interest and need.
