Sustainable Healthcare

Partnering for a Greener Future in Healthcare

Climate change and healthcare are intrinsically linked. The healthcare sector is on the front line of climate impacts — and is a significant contributor to emissions, being responsible for approximately 4.4% of global net greenhouse gas emissions. To meet ambitious net zero targets while improving public health and reducing inequalities, healthcare systems must build capacity, embed sustainability into their operations, and upskill their workforce with the green skills needed for a low-carbon future.

Supporting sustainable healthcare means equipping staff with the skills to lead and deliver low-carbon care, creating systems and structures that enable lasting change, supporting behaviour change among professionals and patients alike, investing in innovation and low-carbon solutions that improve health outcomes, and helping the sector move from awareness to action.

At ISEP we support healthcare organisations in leading this transition. Our corporate partnerships offer a platform to collaborate, share best practice, and access the latest thinking on embedding sustainability across leadership, governance, systems, and careers.

What does ISEP offer?

Build capacity & capability for sustainability

We work with healthcare partners to build internal capability – supporting workforce development, systems change, and leadership for net zero. Our aim is to empower organisations to integrate environmental sustainability into core operational delivery.

Sustainability Champions at NHS Supply Chain

The NHS has committed to becoming the world’s first net zero national health service, with ambitious targets.

Yet 98% of their emissions are Scope 3, outside their direct control. So NHS Supply Chain has to influence stakeholders across our value chain to achieve collective carbon reduction goals.

NHS Supply Chain launched their Sustainability Champions Group in 2024 — a grassroots initiative designed to foster a culture of sustainability from within.

Cut through the complexity of environmental reporting

Sustainability and environment professionals face significant challenges in navigating increasingly complex reporting requirements – having to interpret evolving regulatory frameworks while also guiding others to integrate sustainability into everyday operations.

Developed in partnership with NHS Supply Chain and ABHI, this ‘Guidance for Reporting Requirements’ is a simple snapshot of current reporting requirements. It is designed to help you understand and align with existing regulatory obligations, without adding unnecessary complexity.

An introduction to product carbon footprints

This paper aims to support practitioners seeking to navigate this complexity and develop robust product carbon footprints
(PCFs) to enable organisations to make decisions and choices that cut emissions.

This paper is aimed at practitioners who are looking to conduct PCFs. It demystifies the process – providing practitioners with an understanding of the standards and guidance that inform PCFs, introducing and explaining key terminology and concepts, and highlighting some of the common challenges and hurdles facing those conducting PCFs.

How environmental management can deliver value to organisations

This paper sets out the case for environmental management as the bedrock of sustainability and a core asset of high value in effective organisation administration. An environmental management system can be used to manage environmental risks effectively and maximise opportunities to achieve long-term prosperity.

This guide is for non-environmental/sustainability senior executives and managers to support their understanding of the value and benefit of a good environmental management system. This paper provides an overview of what an environmental management system is, how it can benefit organisations, how it fits into other management systems across organisations, and the value that environmental management can bring to operations.

Health in Environmental Assessment

Among the key factors to be considered when undertaking an Environmental Impact Assessment is the effect of a potential project on population, human health, and risks to human health. This guide unpacks the role of competent experts in conducting Impact Assessments.

Circular procurement

Procurement is one of the most important, but quite often also one of the most overlooked, phases in the lifecycle of the materials, products and services we use.

The outcomes from circular procurement activities can have a substantial and lasting influence on the way in which we manufacture and use goods and services, and how we facilitate a more efficient and ‘closed loop’ flow of resources within the economy.

This guide from the ISEP Circular Economy Network has been prepared to help equip sustainability and procurement practitioners and teams, as well as organisations’ value chains, to transition towards the circular economy.
