ISEP deputy CEO Martin Baxter urged students to help lead the “green skills revolution” during the London Student Sustainability Conference at Kingston University, describing environmental and social sustainability as “the challenge of our time”.
Hundreds of students attended the annual event to exchange ideas, present projects and explore ways to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Work from 10 London universities was showcased, highlighting innovation across the sustainability field.
Baxter outlined the scale of the challenge. With the world’s population projected to grow by 1.5 billion by 2050, demand for food, water and energy will rise while natural resources remain limited. However, he emphasised that many solutions already exist, including sustainable food production, water stewardship and renewable energy technologies.
He argued that the main barrier is not a lack of solutions, but how societies organise themselves and value natural resources. Achieving a sustainable future will require changes in systems, behaviours and decision-making. Baxter encouraged students to become “changemakers”. He also highlighted ISEP’s work to strengthen sustainability skills across the workforce, stressing that “all jobs are greener” and that the transition will require professionals from a wide range of disciplines.
Assess your sustainability skills and plan your next professional step with ISEP’s new skills gap tool. This digital tool is designed to assess confidence across the ISEP Sustainability Skills Map at your membership level. By honestly rating your confidence in your knowledge, skills and ability to apply them in practice, you can see where you excel and where development opportunities lie.
Once completed, you will receive your results online and in a downloadable PDF, giving you a practical starting point for growth. You can use your outcomes to create a personal development plan, discuss targeted actions with your mentor or line manager, and align your progression with both your career goals and your organisation’s sustainability priorities.
Professional development starts with self-awareness. Start today and turn insight into action. www.isepglobal.org/learn/isep-skills-gap-tool
Demand for sustainability professionals is expected to accelerate in 2026 as organisations embed environmental priorities into core business strategy, according to new insights from Hays. The findings highlight a shift from sustainability as a niche function to a mainstream workforce requirement, prompting organisations to rethink recruitment, upskilling and retention strategies to secure scarce talent.
