In 2025, the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP), in collaboration with the Carbon Accounting Alliance, will launch the Register of Carbon Accountants and Auditors, a groundbreaking initiative that allows professionals like you to showcase your expertise in carbon accounting and auditing.
The Register will provide a clear, credible way for individuals and organisations to demonstrate their qualifications and experience in carbon accounting to clients, regulatory bodies, and voluntary reporting schemes. Whether you’re an individual professional or part of a consultancy, registration will give you the tools to show that you meet the industry’s rigorous standards for managing carbon data effectively and ethically.
The main goal of the Register is to promote effective carbon accounting practices by establishing high-quality standards based on the knowledge and experience of professionals in the field. By becoming a registered carbon accountant or auditor, you’ll not only enhance your professional credibility but also contribute to building trust and transparency in carbon reporting.
The Register will also provide a defined career pathway, offering opportunities for growth and recognition as the demand for skilled carbon accountants continues to rise.
We’ve proposed three distinct grades for carbon accountants: Associate, Practitioner, and Principal. Each grade comes with its own set of competencies, tailored to the level of expertise required. There is also a standalone grade of Auditor.
The Carbon Accountants and Auditing Register will be part of ISEP’s Specialist Registers portfolio, managed by the Professional Standards team and administered day-to-day by ISEP’s Membership and Standards team. This ensures that the Register maintains the highest level of quality and professionalism.
We’re currently working on finalising the framework of competencies, which will be signed off by ISEP’s Professional Standards Committee (a sub-committee of the board).
We anticipate that once the competency framework and application criteria are finalised, training providers will review their syllabi to see whether there are any gaps that could be filled or where there are opportunities for new courses to be developed.
People will be able to progress through the levels when they have gathered the CPD and case studies to demonstrate that their competencies meet the requirements of the next level.
We’re currently working on finalising the costs, which we anticipate will be in line with the costs for our other professional registers. The cost will be published alongside the competency framework and the application process, when these are finalised.
We’re currently working on finalising the application process, which will be similar to the application processes for our other specialist registers. We’re looking at how we can make the process as streamlined as possible for people who have already been in the field for a number of years. The renewal process will be in line with that for our other professional registers.
Get in touch via THIS FORM if you have any other questions and would like to be kept updated on the development of the register.
