We can help you deliver on your sustainability goals, with information, best practice and tools to put you ahead on ideas and innovation. You can also get the training you need to increase your knowledge and skills in the field. You can expect to build your influence and connect with others like you across ISEP, as part of the Practitioner community.

  • How to achieve PISEP

There are two ways to achieve PISEP membership:

    1. Via the Certified ‘Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management’ training course.
    2. Via the Direct Study route whereby you undertake the assessment having completed your own research and learning (you will need to source your own learning materials to help you prepare for the exam. Guided learning materials are only available if you take the Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management training course).

Different people like to learn in different ways which is why we offer two routes to achieving Practitioner membership.

If you already have the appropriate sustainability and environmental knowledge, then the direct study route allows you to register to complete the online exam and written case study assessment with ISEP.

If, however, you prefer a training course that is delivered either in a classroom or through e-learning, there is an approach to learning that works for you via an ISEP approved training partner.

If within the last three years you have completed either the ISEP Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management course or an ISEP approved degree then you will be eligible to fast-track your application. When you apply, you will need to select that you are eligible to fast-track and upload a valid copy of your course/degree certificate that falls within the 3 year timeframe.

    Applying via a Certified Course

Three knowledge based assignments and a written submission.

We can prepare you with everything you need to know with our Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management course. Delivered either in a classroom, through e-learning or work-based learning there is an approach to learning that works for you.

Click here to find out more about the course and how to book.

    Applying via Direct Study

Online exam and a written submission.

If you already have experience in an environment and sustainability role you can apply for Practitioner membership directly with ISEP. This involves completing an online exam which, once passed, is then followed by a written case study assessment. Our Practitioner Assessors will review your assessment and once they are happy you meet the Practitioner Standard, you will be able to use the PISEP suffix.

  • Application overview

There are two steps to applying

    Step 1

Certified Course – Complete the ISEP Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management course via an ISEP approved training partner. After the course you must complete three knowledge-based assignments which is administered and marked via the training partner delivering the course.

    or

Direct Study - If you already have the appropriate sustainability and environmental knowledge, you can complete an online, one-hour multiple choice exam, assessing that you have the level of knowledge required of a Practitioner member. This is administered by ISEP.

    or

Eligible to fast-track? If within the last three years you have completed an ISEP approved degree then you can apply for an exemption to the exam, meaning you will fast-track straight to the written assessment of competence.

    Step 2

Written Assessment of Competence (Written Submission) - Once you have successfully completed one of the routes above, ISEP will contact you via email to complete your written assessment of competence.

Within the assessment of competence, you will be required to submit written evidence of up to four case studies demonstrating how you apply your environment and sustainability knowledge and skills in the workplace, to the level required in the Practitioner standard. Each of your case studies will need to be verified by a witness, which could be a manager, colleague or client.

You will be given 3 months from the date of receiving your confirmation email from us to submit your written assessment of competence.

    Things to note:

    • Exemptions; if within the last three years you have completed either the ISEP Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management course or an ISEP approved degree then you will be eligible to fast-track your application. When you apply, you’ll need to select that you are eligible to fast-track and upload a valid copy of your course/degree certificate that falls within this timeframe.
    • Exam versions; within the Practitioner standard the technical knowledge is split into environment and socio-economic. The environment version of the exam is assessed on the environment related learning outcomes. The sustainability version of the exam is assessed on the environment and socio-economic related learning outcomes. To view the learning outcomes, download a copy of the Practitioner member standard below.
    • Exam Schedule; exams are run on a month-by-month basis, with the exam window being live for 28 days. You’ll need to select your preferred month when you apply.

What do others say about Practitioner membership?

As an ISEP Practitioner and Registered Environmental Practitioner member, I can attest to the profound impact that ISEP has had on my journey. Through their comprehensive courses and supportive community, ISEP equips professionals like me with the knowledge and skills needed to drive meaningful change. From sustainable business practices to legislative insights, ISEP provides the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of environmental management with confidence. Joining ISEP has not only elevated my expertise but also connected me with a network of like-minded individuals dedicated to creating a sustainable future. If you're passionate about environmental stewardship, ISEP is the catalyst you've been searching for. Join me in shaping a brighter tomorrow with ISEP.

Mukhtar Mian, Environmental Manager

I joined ISEP in May 2021 as an affiliate member. As a founding committee member of the Chartered Quality Institute's (CQI) sustainability special interest group established the same year to promote sustainability within the quality profession in practical terms through the provision of a forum where quality professionals network, exchange best practices and ideas, and share material on sustainability issues, I needed to join a globally respected professional body on environmental management and sustainability to enhance my knowledge and skills. Although based in Nigeria, joining ISEP provided me access to CPD opportunities, which enabled me to stay up-to-date with the latest trends, legislation, and best practices in environmental management, which I in turn used to provide valuable insights to other quality professionals. In 2023, in order to progress my membership in ISEP, I completed the ISEP certificate in environmental management (CEM) qualification, which further improved my ability to implement effective environmental management and sustainability initiatives for my clients. In February 2024, I achieved recognized professional status with ISEP by becoming a practitioner member of the institute. This professional recognition has enhanced my credibility, leading to new opportunities. This professional recognition has further reassured my clients of my commitment to professionalism and ethical practices. ISEP provides a wealth of resources, including guidance documents, case studies, and research reports, which are invaluable for me as a management systems consultant seeking to implement best practices in environmental management, and I'm happy to be a part of a global network that provides ample opportunities to connect with other professionals in the field, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration on projects or initiatives.

Adare Oluwafemi PISEP, Management Systems and Sustainability Implementation Consultant

As a sustainability officer at a multi academy trust, I have found ISEP CPD and resources invaluable. As a sector to which sustainability is a relatively new area of focus, there is little sector specific guidance and CPD. The quality of the content provided by ISEP and the certified training courses means that I now have the skills and knowledge to apply to my sector and context.

Julie Rowlandson, Sustainability Officer

I joined ISEP 2 years ago and I am happy I made that decision. I have obtained so much value from the resources provided on the platform; one that stood out for me was "Organizational capability: Driving sustainability skills in your organization". This resource informed me on strategies for ensuring sustainability is influenced across my own organization. This was worth remembering for me as we live in times when professionals still struggle with understanding the components of sustainability, much more transitioning. I have better understanding on sustainability thanks to ISEP resources, webinars and my own self developmental efforts. This has differentiated me from other sustainability professionals in the Nigerian industry. I have referred and coached several colleagues in my network to subscribe to the ISEP CEM certificate to enhance their sustainability skills. The Practitioner membership status (PISEP) has accorded me some sort of recognition as I get selected for interviews with recruiters for sustainability roles. Hopefully I should become chartered soon.

Priscilia Obot Young, Sustainability Manager

I am having backgrounds in M.Sc. Environmental and Earth Resources Management and a B.Sc. in Natural Resources Management. I am currently with Azumah Resources Ghana Limited as Environmental Officer. As part of my responsibilities in my company, I do routine inspections and periodic internal auditing. I also carry out water quality monitoring to assess quality issues and compliance. i doubled as a community relation officer which means stakeholder engagement and community entry meetings. The module added to my knowledge on moral and ethical issues and also the essence of corporate social responsibility.

Saeed Anwar, Senior Environmental & Sustainability Engineer

As an academic of 30 years, I'm used to reading, studying and working to deadlines. However, these days I am much more comfortable setting exams than sitting them. And although I have published on many aspects of sustainable development, I haven't had much contact with the coalface of business strategy, product development, marketing and compliance. Taking the ISEP Certificate in Environmental Management with Dave Evans at Act Sustainably, I have rediscovered the excitement of being a student, learning new skills and striking out in a new direction. Working alongside tri-sector professionals, the ISEP pathway has opened up a new world of consultancy and collaboration in which I will be able to start contributing to real change on the ground within institutions (not least my own university) and companies. Opening up new areas of work, I couldn't be more excited about the prospect of eventually becoming a MISEP Chartered Environmentalist.

Stephen Quilley, Associate Professor Social and Ecological Innovation

As a member of ISEP, I have found tremendous value in the resources and support they provide. The access to a wide network of professionals and the opportunity to attend career events have been invaluable for my career growth. Additionally, the wellbeing support and mental health initiatives offered by ISEP have made a positive impact on my overall well-being. I highly recommend ISEP to anyone looking to excel in the field of environmental management and sustainability.

Michael Ovia, Consultant

Having joined ISEP last year, I can already feel ISEP's impact towards shaping sustainability professional's career journey and developing the knowledge of the wider community. ISEP offers webinars, discussion forums and events (both online and in-person) relevant to different areas of sustainability, so I was able to select the ones that cater towards my sustainability career and interests. The most important aspect of ISEP that I value highly is its vast network of people - to tackle the largest problem humanity has faced in decades, working together with like-minded people will be key to success. Getting to know other sustainability practioners can only help grow my professional network and share insights to adapt to my own area of sustainability profession.

Clemens Yuen, Chair

I have been a member of ISEP since I was a student completing my MSc in Environmental Management. During my time studying, I found the local networking events, webinars and monthly magazines. I naturally upgraded to Graduate level when I started working in the sector, and through continued professional development, I have moved from Associate to Practioner - now being a member for 10 years! Throughout my career, both working in-house and as an independent environmental consultant, being recognised as PISEP gives confidence to the organisations that I work with. It is an easy way for me to demonstrate that I have the skills and knowledge necessary to do the work that is required. I have undertaken several ISEP qualifications over the years to improve my competency and stay updated with environmental and sustainability that are relevant to my work. I believe ISEP membership provides immense value for sustainability professionals in terms of networking, skills development and knowledge exchange.

Tamma Carel, Committee Member

Alexandra Vella, Associate

Being a member of ISEP helps me stay up to date on all environmental news and regulations, attend webinars I am most interested in and expand my knowledge in sustainability. Achieving the Practitioner level in my ISEP membership helped me reflect on the goals I have been able to reach in my sustainability role at a marketing agency and identify areas for further improvement.

Elisa Caton, Committee Member

ISEP provides / discusses all contemporary information on the issues around the Globe in the field of Environment, Biodiversity, Sustainability etc. It provides equal opportunities to all the associated stakeholders to exhibit their views and invites participation. Its an excellent resource / encylopedia for entry level associates like me to enrich my knowledge and lead the professional life.

Balaji Velu, Environmental Auditor

Being part of ISEP has really been instrumental in my career journey. My understanding and knowledge of Environmental and Sustainability issues has been heightened through the application of lessons learnt during my course. ISEP is indeed an avalanche for Environmental and Sustainability development.

Christian Adjei Dompreh, Environment, Social & Permits Supervisor

I have spent over 30 years working in the waste recycling industry (specifically metal recycling). I was a safety professional for many years , but the company I work for wanted to combine both safety and environmental roles. I had a very good practical understanding of environmental and sustainability management at metal recycling sites, but had no formal qualifications and lacked the underpinning knowledge to fulfil this new role. I therefore completed the ISEP Certificate in Environmental Management and became a Practitioner Member of ISEP (PISEP). The qualification I undertook and the tuition I received to achieve it was truly inspirational. This experience was also shared by other delegates on the course I attended. I would go as far as to say that it has changed my outlook on sustainability. I apply what I have learned to both my work and personal life and have become a strong advocate.

Danny Swygart, Regional Safety, Health and Environmental Manager

When I joined ISEP in 2014, I'd just started out in the world of sustainability. My job then was dedicating 50% of my time to developing a corporate social responsibility policy for a chain of schools. I studied for my Certificate in Environmental Management in 2015, which enabled me to become a Practitioner member of ISEP in 2016. I now work in the public sector, delivering net zero for a government body that regulates more than £2 trillion of investments in the UK. ISEP has been pivotal in getting me to where I am - the various networks, regular communications, training opportunities and peer group all give a coherent foundation on which to build any career in sustainability and environmental management.

Daniel Woodard, Sustainability & Net Zero Advisor

ISEP provides me with all the updates training and webinars that keeps my industry knowledge up to date, as well as giving learning opportunity in innovation or current topics. Also the ability to undertake the Practitioner exam has allowed me to have further recognition for my knowledge and particularly industry experience. The resources and support offered to progress is also really beneficial.

Georgia England, Environment and Sustainability Advisor

I came to environmental management fairly late in my career with my only science qualification being an o'level in biology. At the age of 50 I undertook a CIPS qualification which involved six exams so when I began looking at a professional qualification for environment (age 53), I swore that I didn't want to 'do exams' again. ISEP offered a fantastic opportunity to gain a professional qualification by using my practical experience and expertise rather than textbook. I undertook six modules, wrote six short dissertations and passed with no difficulty. Being able to use the PISEP membership adds gravitas to how I am perceived in my industry and I have earned a lot of respect from being able to demonstrate professional membership alongside my experience. You don't need to be a young graduate to progress in this profession and ISEP recognises this.

Janice Johnson, Supply Chain & Sustainability Manager

ISEP's frequent insightful information on netzero, energy transition, sustainability, Circular econmony and green skills published via email publibcation and webnars have been very helpful in updating my knowlegde and understanding of the present environmental and sustainability issues and provides a focus for my objectives and goals, and influence as environmental and sustainability manager of my organisation. The interaction ISEP offers through regional online meetings allows interaction and peer-to-peer sharing of practitioner perspectives, which strenthens my confidence for executing environmental and sustainbility initiatives for my organisation. For example I'm able to define the strategies for Decarbonisation and zero-routine flare for my organisation's operation.

John Korle-Morgan, HSSE Manager

In 2015, while conducting online research, I fortuitously encountered the International Environmental Management Association (ISEP). Intrigued by its reputation and the vast repository of knowledge it promised, I was prompted to delve into the comprehensive tome, [John_Brady]_Environmental_Management_in_Organizations. With a background as a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) professional, my forte had primarily been on the safety dimensions. However, upon undertaking a major pipeline construction initiative, I became acutely aware of the intricate environmental considerations intrinsic to such expansive projects.

Magsud Aghayev, HSE Team Lead

I am a construction manager, not a full time environmental manager. However sustainability and environmental matters affect all walks of life. When I build, I try to ensure that the built environment is as sustainable as possible. One of my most enjoyable construction projects was roadworks on the banks of the Nile in Uganda. Any pollution would have had a potential effect all the way to the Mediterranean. Applying my environmental training helped the project win words of praise from the Ugandan authorities.
